Hello... I am Dawnette Renee. I am a self-taught mixed media artist originally from Texas now living in Virginia. Growing up in a city heavily influenced by Mexican American Culture where their use of vivid and colorful palettes was not something I would come to appreciate until many years later after I moved away. Over the years my art has evolved into an element that is a huge part of my everyday life. Art is where I can express myself freely; whether I am painting, art journaling, scrapbooking, book binding, sewing, interior decorating, or giving an old piece of furniture a new look. It is this creative space where I am most content. My parents played a large role in my art and creativity. My Mother was very creative and always taking classes on everything from ceramics, floral arranging, to painting. I remember her buying me how-to drawing books, color book, paints, and anything to inspire my creativity. Abstract painting became a positive outlet of expression for my Father who suffered from dementia in his last year after he lost his ability to speak. The time and memories spent together creating paintings that I have hanging in my home today are priceless to me and a reminder of just how powerful expression through creativity is. It wasn’t until around 2016 and after the loss of both parents that I began painting abstract. Abstract painting became a conduit for the emotional pain and grief one goes through at a pivotal time in life such as this. My paint, brush, and canvas became my voice as it had for my Father when words failed me. In 2017 I was asked if I would be interested in hanging some of my art in a local business. Thus far I had only painted for myself but with a little push I decided why not. My decision to say yes has opened so many doors like curating for a local business, art exhibitions, and participating within my local community. As an artist I hope to continue to paint art that not only moves me forward but to create pieces that touch, inspire, and move others in a positive way. I hope to continue to grow as an artist by exploring everything art has to offer. Some are cooks, bakers, musicians, poets, photographers, and some are storytellers. I believe we are all creative souls in our own unique ways.
